For me, this film took multiple viewings over the course of a few years to fully understand. In my own defense, I saw it when I was 17, which was not the intended age of Malick’s audience. I wasn’t prepared for his odd insert shots of trees and bugs. I had been raised on films with plots that even a blind man could follow and this, as we all know, is not one of those films.
